I once knew a pitcher on a little minor league baseball team in some small town that no one’s ever heard of. He was a veteran minor leaguer… would never make the show, right? People mostly came to the games for the lemonade, cotton candy, and conversation. However, each game, one opposing batter was designated the PANCAKE BATTER. If the home team’s pitcher struck him out, everyone in the crowd got free pancakes at the local Pancake Palace. And you see, this veteran, he lived to pitch for the pancakes. The crowd would go always go quiet when the pancake batter stepped up to the plate. He could feel the tension in the air, and would remember just for a moment what it was like to pitch when it meant something. This was his show. And he brought his good stuff… every time.
To all those aspiring writers out there, find your pancake batter… Make it count, even when you’re not sure it will… Because there are a lot of hungry people out there, and you never know when they might be in the crowd…
