  1. Clerks. Says:

I was just saying, what happened to the Hitchock’ian movies? They don’t make those anymore. Awesome to see.

  2. exec1 Says:

    Clerks.,
please see this past weekend’s box office. Insert SHUTTER ISLAND and THE GHOST WRITER.

  3. TUSKEN Says:

Anyone know the director or logline?

  4. III Says:

    just keeps picking up steam.

  5. exec1 Says:

or III it just continues to languish in the marketplace and some producers become more willing to take a flier on it. Not trying to be cynical, just trying to be honest about the spec market.

  6. Clerks. Says:

    exec1 — you’re a happy camper aren’t you?

Any more info on what the story is about, etc would be cool to hear. Or we can remind everyone that specs are hard to sell. Whichever is easier.

  7. III Says:

    i feel ya.

but a flier is better than silence…if the last 900 days of scarcity have taught us anything. something is definitely better than nothing.

  8. III Says:

a NYC, hot-shot, up and coming architect gets the opportunity of a lifetime to build his dream building, in Dubai. Once on the ground, all hell breaks loose.

the first act is very reminiscent of blank slate. obviously a different feel, but writing reminds as of such.

this guy loves his architecture too. cool from that perspective.

  9. exec1 Says:

Clerks. I don’t know the logline. I’m only reading the situation. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer. In fact, I’m rather encouraged by the fact that about half a dozen specs have sold so far this year (ATM, KILLER, SAFEHOUSE, THE ESCORT, 21 SHOTS, ABDUCTION). Am I leaving any out? I’m just stating the obvious. When producers who RARELY play the spec market are submitting a spec that is a week old to a studio that is not their home . . . you have to do the math.

  10. Storyteller Says:

…Or Doug Dower? Why does it always have to be Debbie…

  11. Hammonds Says:

Exec, when it’s a script going out from a solo shop, with no attachments, don’t you think it can take a little more time to win fans and work its way up the food chain?

  12. exec1 Says:

I take it all back, i’m the asshole.

  13. III Says:

All right, all right I’ll ask her. Miss, miss! Do you know where the high school girls hang out around here? What? What? That’s right, I’m the asshole! I’m the asshole!

  14. Jack Traven Says:

*claps* for genius and never-not-funny ‘Swingers’ line. Prob one of my fave moments in the movie — if only because I had friends do that to me in diners.

  15. TUSKEN Says:

    Knew that sounded familiar.

  16. III Says:

with all the uncertainties surrounding the gulf region, especially the debt load of Dubai/UAE. if this is to sell, it needs to now and be greenlit with great haste.

Dubai may be able to slow play the demands on their D/E ratio, hoping the tourism and real estate markets swing back in full force, combined with a massive influx of new cash…otherwise this will be very much a time capsule of what was Dubai over the last decade, instead of a present day zeitgeist into extravagant consumption.

  17. TUSKEN Says:

I enjoyed this script. The Dubai thing is not a concern. The city plays into the story well. I skimmed over a little, but only checked the page number like five times. A ‘North by Northwest’ type of Hitchcockian thing. Not ‘Vertigo’ or ‘Strangers on a Train’ Hitchcock. If anything it made me think ‘Taken’ meets ‘Breakdown.’ Could see Jake in this role. Maybe Zac. Too nerdy for Christian or Leo as a lead.

  18. RJMacready Says:

I found the writing to be sub-par. But if folks are comparing this to Hitchcock — I’m clearly the minority. Read Dubai by Cozad. THAT cat can write.

  19. TUSKEN Says:

@RJMac: Sure, I’ll agree that the writing itself wasn’t amazing. But the fact is I got caught up in the story and just let all the spelling errors and lengthy descriptions and other little things slide, because the story and the charaters were there. Just MO. I’ll seek out DUBAI. I know nothing about it.

  20. III Says:

dubai is great. it was BL07. so it’s not hard to find.

  21. TUSKEN Says:

Now that’s just awesome. Congrats to Caren and Mr. Stiles.

  22. Jack Traven Says:

That spec ‘Dubai’ is actually becoming Jack Ryan 5. I heard they’re moving it to Moscow though. Not sure how that works. Good script though. And this one wasn’t bad either – felt a little ‘new writery’ (typos that should never have cleared management) but it moved.
