Screenwriter Ernie Cline (FANBOYS, THUNDERCADE) got the attention of the entire publishing world this week when his debut young adult fiction novel, READY PLAYER ONE, sparked a bidding war amongst all the major publishers.  Story: In the near future, outcast teenager Wade Watts escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first. Think WILLY WONKA, THE MATRIX, and AVATAR all rolled into one.

We can confirm that Random House just won the auction with a high six figures advance for Domestic Publication rights.    International rights are currently being auctioned off.   Book is being represented by Dan Farah of Farah Films & Management, and Yfat Gendell of Foundry Literary.   Farah is attached to the film rights as a producer, and plans on opening the auction for film rights tomorrow am (JUNE 18TH), but is entertaining a pre-emptive studio deal. Cline is represented as a screenwriter by Farah, and Paradigm.

sounds very very cool – best of luck!

Am I the only one that thinks this doesn’t feel particularly inspired? I mean – congrats to Ernie – that’s a HUGE sale. Two sales actually. He’s getting the book check AND the movie check, but I’ve read soooo many specs that are ‘Game turns into real-life adventure’. AND there’s a ton of these movies currently set-up at multiple studios (in dev hell naturally). He must be bringing something new to the table that I’m not reading in this description.

The problem with gamer movies is that the technology is so fluid and ever-changing, that it’s hard to stay ahead of the advances. It’s like doing movies about cell-phones, computers, social network sites…a year later – it seems clunky and behind-the-times. WB better make this thing QUICK.

  3. Jack Traven Says:

That said, this thing DID sell and it IS an original property (Sure, it’s based on a book, but the writer wrote the book and sold both the book and the rights the same week – so technically this is kind of a spec sale). Ernie’s not a gigantic ‘name’, so this does speak to a spec market that WILL buy something that excites execs. I’ve never been terribly impressed with Ernie’s over-reliance on nostalgic-gamer-geek culture (execs hate that stuff btw) but he seems to strike a nerve.

  4. Eubrontes Says:

I don’t know, man. The brilliant appeal of a fortune for what you love (a la Willy Wonka) matched with the coolness of The Matrix, and the promise of a new world a la Avatar? I’m not having any problems whatsoever seeing how this sold…

  5. Jack Traven Says:

Oh, I hear ya – it just might not be coming through on the logline. I’ve read a lot of stuff like this, so I’m a bit jaded.

Willy Wonka meets The Matrix meets Avatar….My head just did a 360 !
